And We Are Off!

 Hi Everyone! It’s Rachel.

Today marks the beginning of the next summer adventure. We are leaving right now to drive to Chicago and spend the night there. Then tomorrow we have to be at the airport at 4:30am to fly to Seattle. We are meeting Taylor in Seattle because he has spent the last 10 days in Utah hanging out with our cousin, visiting our grandparents and attending EFY (a church camp) at BYU.

Our trip starts with a family reunion in some fun places in Washington (including North Cascades and Olympic National Parks)  and in Vancouver, Canada. Sarah Ann will also be competing at the North American Irish Dance Championships in Vancouver. From there we are flying to Bangkok, and then Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore. Singapore will act as our home base, since my dad will be working there for a month and I will be doing an internship. The rest of my family will go to Sri Lanka and fly home. My dad and I will stay in Singapore for a few more weeks. I won’t be returning to Wisconsin for almost two months.

We have been busy getting ready. Packing was an interesting challenge since we are trying to bring as few suitcases as possible. The issue is that Vancouver is cool and Southeast Asia is hot and we have to be able to visit conservative religious sites, hike outdoors, and I need normal clothes to wear to my internship – and Sarah Ann needs a wig! We each get to take 6 outfits, so in the pictures, you probably will see lots of similar clothing over the 2 weeks. Taylor tried sneaking a stash of extra clothes in his carry-on when he went to Utah. My mom was not amused. We also visited the travel doctor. Southeast Asia has new diseases than we have here in the United States, and being sick while traveling is no fun. We had to take typhoid fever immunization pills for 8 days (which by the way come with side effects of nausea and stomach pain) and we have malaria medicine we have to take before going to Cambodia. We are taking so much medicine with us that I feel like we could start our own pharmacy! We also will have to wear bug spray pretty much all the time since there are many diseases carried by mosquitoes.

So come follow our adventures! We will try to post updates and pictures every day from one of the Huber kids. I am sure we will have some pretty crazy, exciting and fun adventures, so get ready to hear about the 4 kids around the world - the Southeast Asia edition.

See you in Seattle!
