The Most Beautiful Train Ride in the World

for Monday, August 5th

Today we woke up really early at 5:30. It was completely worth it though. As we were walking to the train station from the distance it looked abandoned but then a bus appeared out of the blue. All the people on the bus got off and got in line for the train. After a little adventure we figured out how to pick up our pre-ordered tickets and get on the train. The train ride was amazing. It's known as the most beautiful train ride in the world. We stuck our head out the window, with a light breeze passing by our face while lush green mountains appeared out the window. When we stepped off the train we experienced something we hadn’t felt in a long time. We felt cold. Since we were up high in the mountains with the clouds surrounding us, it was actually quite chilly.

We found a tuk tuk to drive us up to Lipton’s peak (Lipton as in Lipton tea). Our tuk tuk driver promised us that the other side of the mountain would be less cloudy, and as a result, warmer. The drive was amazing. The tuk tuk weaved back and forth on windy roads up the mountain with an amazing view right off the window with the four of us squeezed in the back.  Every five minutes our tuk tuk driver would pull over and tell us to look at the view. It was incredibly green with mountains and rows and rows of tea plants. Sri Lanka is one of the world’s largest producers of tea. We could also see the Tamil women out picking the tea leaves. The driver would ask for mom’s phone and pose us and take all of our pictures. It was a long process because he would pose all of us and then take like 10 pictures from all different angles. The best part was though was that he let us drive the tuk tuk.  It was dope. At first Christian was a little shy and nervous but then he warmed up to it.

At the top it was actually really chilly. We went into this little place where they served us tea (which we didn’t drink) and some snacks. We were freezing! Then finally the sun came out. We walked partway down before the tuk tuk picked us up again. It was really neat to see all the workers out on the mountain on the tee plantations picking the tea leaves. We also went on a tea factory tour of the Dambatenne Tea Factory which was founded by Sir Thomas Lipton (as in Lipton tea) in 1890. It was interesting to learn how tea is made but Sarah Ann didn’t like it because the smell was disgusting.

The train ride home was also awesome. We opened a door to the outside and dangled our legs outside of the train while we watched the scenery fly by.

I’m really excited for tomorrow because we are going on a safari in a national park. We are supposed to see lots of elephants and it is supposed to be really neat.
